it's a good practice to be thankful

Look at your inner man with spiritual eyes and ask yourself if you are pleased with yourself. What have you achieved, being guided by reason alone? What are you? You are young, you are rich, you are educated, my dear sir. What have you done with all these good things that have been given you? Are you content with yourself and your life?"
"No, I hate my life."
--Pierre and The Mason, War & Peace

January is eleven days deep. Twenty-Seventeen has dawned and will never dawn again in any of our lifetimes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make something of this year. We will never have this year again. We will never be this young again.

I have many plans for 2017. I covered my bedroom mirror with sticky notes listing my goals for the year. I want to end the year completely different than how it began. I want to be a different person. I want to have a new outlook, a new place to sleep, new tattoos, new friends, new skills, new books finished at bars. I want to learn how to be alone, how to take care of myself, how to be a real friend to others.

But the best way to start a new beginning is to know what you already have. To know how to be thankful for that which has been given to you. If you don't know what you have, you'll always be yearning for what you think you need.

So I thank God for what I have been given, and I close my eyes and imagine what will be.
